owl eyes
Animals, Animals, Animals. This was a TV programme I used to watch occasionally as a boy, after I got home from school. It was hosted by Hal Linden from the cop sitcom Barney Miller. I enjoyed the colourful style it was presented in with cool graphics and an endearing sense of humour.

As a young lad and into my early teens my favourite animal was the cheetah. I loved how it was the fastest land animal in the world, and that it looked different from the other big cats. In fact it was more closely related to the hyena, which is of the dog family.

Then I came to the realisation that I loved most of the big cats, but especially the tiger. However I finally decided my favourite favourite animal was a land animal considered to be the most ferocious land animal in the world, a beautiful predator that humans have not been able to get very close to in the wild.

Yes, the polar bear is my favourite animal, paws down.

But I love so many animals, all kinds of critters. As much as I like the cute, cuddly ones, I also admire the snarling, deadly, some would say hideous ones. Creatures that command respect, yet often don’t receive it (ie those endangered creatures that are hunted and poached).

I like creatures that hiss and spit, snort and grunt, ones that growl and roar. I like ones that simply snuffle, and even ones that barely make a sound.

So here are some of my favourite looking creatures, in no particular order.

polar bear and cub

puma

barn owl

black panther

black rhinoceros

Brown bear aka grizzly bear

cheetah

mountain goat

crocodile with lunch

anaconda

great white shark

fox

hedgehog

lion

mustang

orca aka killer whale

giant panda bear

emperor penguin and chick

sea horse

Siberian tiger

Siberian husky

snow leopard

dolphin

wolf

Yup, as you can see I have a special place in my style of eye for the big cats ... If I could have a puma for a pet, I'd have one. If I could have a polar bear cub for a pet, well ... It was hard limiting these gorgeous - some grotesque, yet still so impressive looking - creatures down to just twenty-four. Where's the elephant, you ask? And the platapus?

Tracy, yeah, uber-cute, the hedgie, I guess they must have de-germed him before handling ... cos their spines can get covered in nasty bacteria.
I forgot to include the Kookaburra, a most handsome bird.

Raoul,

Such wonderful pics. I'm a HUGE fan of the bit cats too. I must say I do have a soft spot for the black puma. Oh and the leopard. Jaguar. Lion. Tigers. Did I mention tigers? I LOVE tigers!!!

Some of the less appealing animals I love include:
-crocs.....anything that prehistoric that has managed to survive is a marvel.
-rhinocerous- a friend of mine is a rhino keeper at an open zoo. Amazingly powerful creatures.
-hippopotamus - I think it's their gorgeous little ears on such a huge body that I love. Oh yeah, and the fact that they kill more people than crocodiles every year in the Nile.

Great post

Kylie

Kylie, great comments! Ahhhh, yes, the BIG CATS. I didn't know there was a black puma ...? Are you referring to the black panther?
The cougar/puma/mountain lion is a very handsome cat indeed.
How gorgeous is the snow leopard and the white tiger?!
I almost included the hippo, fantastic creature, and yes, incredibly ferocious! Up there with the polar bear for sheer volatility! Very, very territorial.
It scares me that we may lose some of these precious animals over the next 50 years ... (sigh).

Tracy, well, yes, the list does go on and on ... I've made a "Rule of 24" for my blog though ... lol
Manatees are extraordinary too, they're the sea cows which sparked the whole mermaid myth ...

I've never seen or heard of a manatee, so I'm looking forward to learning more about them. I think I'm going to learn a lot from your blog, Raoul.

I keep thinking of animals I should have included ... Kangeroo popped into my head today. Not sure why I didn't think of it at the time, because I adore the creature, such a unique animal ... I do love the big cats though.

Oh yes, so it is! You're far more observant than me! Do you think it's real?
