Generally the term refers to those good-looking Golden Age of Hollywood actors who’d star as a romantic lead in movies that were more popular due to packed day-time screenings, when housewives could afford the couple of hours escape from domestic duties, provided they’d found a nanny.

My selection is a little broader to say the least. I’m including young men from across the ages, modern and classic. All of them are adored by the camera; some of them even devour it. Yeah, they're pretty boys, that's what matinee idols are. But they're more than just a pretty face, they ooze sex appeal, sometimes a hint or a smirk of danger, and as good as they look in a silk shirt or Armani suit, they always look dynamite with their shirt off.

I’ve always appreciated high cheekbones on a man, there’s something slightly exotic, yet incredibly debonair about a male visage with a strong profile. And if I might be so bold, a man in monochrome speaks volumes!

So, without further adieu, here are just a few of my afternoon delights …

I love the broody nature of actors like Joaquin Phonenix and Jonathon Rhys-Meyers. I admire the chameleon aspect to actors like Christian Bale and Johnny Depp. But I'm a great fan of Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford). And the nonchalant pulchritude of Javier Bardem, he just exudes pure, unadultered style and substance. But for straight-up, no bullshit, sensational, matinee idol good looks? Alain Delon.

Siren (noun). A seductively beautiful or charming woman, esp. one who beguiles men: a siren of the silver screen.

Yes, the siren of the silver screen is a beautiful creature to behold. I'm not talking about the Classical mythology of the half-woman/half-bird that lured men to their deaths with their eerie singing. Although there is an element of mystery and danger in the cinematic siren which is no doubt inspired from the Greek myth.

There are the classic sirens, such as Brigitte or Sophia, and then there are the those whom allure us with their own song; and for me that'd be Beyonce or Erykah.

So what makes a siren so? Often it can be the kinds of roles they perform, or the media image they project. Sometimes it can simply be a look in the eye, the way she plants her gaze. Other sirens use other attributes; legs, hips, breasts, lips, hair. But ultimately it’s in the way they move these attributes across the screen and the magnetic power of their celluloid charisma.

They exude pure sex appeal, but with class and distinction. They are vamps, but with elegance and poise. They can be sulky and moody, but they always look good. They are sultry with attitude to spare.

And then there’s the victims; the men (and women) who fall prey to their seductive powers. Because if we didn’t have the victims, they wouldn’t be sirens, it's as simple as that. However, I’ll be doing a separate post on femme fatales, don’t you worry.

So here is my selection of sirens past and present, a tribute to their universal appeal and dedicated to all the men (and women) who’ve fallen for their charms.

Of course there are dozens of other sirens, but I limit myself to twenty-four, that's the Style of Eye rule of thumb. My songs of the sirens in this selection would have to be; Claudia, Monica and Salma. But that's only because I have to select three. I'd throw myself into the treacherous waves for all of these women!

Debate Battle! JESSICA ALBA vs. JESSICA BIEL

I’m back from my safari expedition! Have ya missed me? Probably not, but not to worry, here’s a little something to get ya’ll excited about! Yup, it’s the beauty battle of the two Jess’s!

We’re not talking about their respective acting chops, this is a blog on visual aesthetics, so it’s their loins we’re more interested in. How do they scrub up? Do they look good in denim? Do they need much make-up? Are they spunky as well as sexy? Do they give good style? How much does the camera love them?

Well, in the case of these two young Hollywood actors the answer is Yes, yes, yes, and a resounding YES! Ms. Alba and Ms. Biel are arguably two of the more stunning-looking actors on the lot. But don’t take my word on it, check ‘em out.

The debate at hand though, and one to get down and dirty about, is whether one Jess is better looking than the other. Are you with Team Alba or Team Biel? Why so?

Jessica Marie Alba was born April 28, 1981, and is of Mexican, French and Danish descent. She’s 1.69m tall (5’6”) and her measurements are 34-24-34.

Jessica Claire Biel was born March 3, 1982, and is of German, French, English and Native American (Choctaw) heritage. She’s 1.73m tall (5’8”) and her measurements are 36C-25-35.
